Talos Perdison, Senshi of Invention Name: Talos Perdison
Talos is a far-from-perfect specimen of humanity. He's rather short and stocky, standing 4'9" (he hasn't hit his growth spurt yet) and weighing 90 lbs. His face and eyes are round and open. Almost everything else about him (shoulders, hands, feet) is square-ish. Unlike most anime-style characters, he does not have very expressionate eyebrows. They never manage to look menacing or angry, only neutral and upset or unhappy. His eyes are navy blue in color and his hair is medium gray, cut short in back with his bangs hanging down to his eyebrows and parted on his left. His skin is yellowish, a tad jaundiced in appearance. He has a tendency to curl up or slouch his shoulders when he sits and shuffles his feet when he walks. From his posture, he looks moody and unfriendly. He's very, very often ill, with whatever happens to be going around at the moment. If someone else has it, he'll get it. He usually looks tired and haggard.
Talos is extremely inquisitive and inventive. He loves to play around with new things, take them apart, and put them back together. He gains a lot of knowledge from actually interacting with things, but books and lectures aren't particularly helpful to him. He learns more from experience. Most of the time, Talos is miserable. He very much wants Sophie to return his feelings and dwells on her rejection for hours on end. The only time he's not thinking about it is when he is inventing, which is probably the only thing that gives him any joy. (Well, that and Twinkies. He really loves those infernal things.) Talos actually believes that he doesn't deserve to be happy and considers himself worthless for being rejected. He doesn't feel that anyone understands him, but he wants people to understand, so will talk to just about anyone he can, particularly senshi. He would probably seek professional help if he weren't afraid of psychiatrists. In battle Talos can be fierce, if he's gotten ticked off. Initially, he'll enter any battle calm and collected, but by the end he degenerates into a monster simply because he can't stand it when other people are attacking him and wants to hit them back as hard as he can. Of course, if he sees Sophie/Metis in a battle, he'll instantly go berserk and do anything to capture her. (Sophie, for the most part, isn't afraid of him and mocks his every attempt, which only makes him madder, etc. etc...) Sometimes, when he's feeling particularly depressed, he'll do nothing but try to swing at people (without actually hitting them) and cry at the same time. (Yeah, some battle...) Talos dislikes the arts and traditionally "creative" things. He could dream up machines all day, but ask him to paint a picture of one with feeling, and he'll probably throw the paint at you. He's pathetically terrible at expressing his emotions artistically and even verbally. (This may be why his attempts to explain himself to others don't go over too well.) While he may not have a lot of confidence overall, Talos has confidence in one thing: his ability to make machines. Unfortunately, that's really about all he's confident about. (Well, that and perhaps his ability to make himself miserable.) He works himself hard and generally falls asleep draped over his desk, his newest invention drawn out in front of him. I'll go ahead and explain the relationship between Talos and his mother, Perdix, since that's very important to understanding the character. Perdix is a very screwed up character. She was a young mother with a hard pregnancy, her husband went off to war leaving her alone, and she had a relationship with Talos in his stead. Talos didn't know any better and loved her unconditionally until many centuries later when he was reincarnated and learned that mothers weren't supposed to do that sort of thing to their kids. You can probably trace the beginnings of Talos's problems to his mother's actions.
Just to establish this: Talos is one of my characters in Sailor Myth, an online rpg based on Sailormoon. Knowledge of Sailormoon is not required to understand the character, but for those of you who might not know, a senshi is basically someone who can transform and wield magical powers. Very long ago in ancient Greece, Talos was sent by his mother Perdix to study under his uncle, Daedalus (of Daedalus and Icarus fame). Talos invented nifty things like the saw and pottery wheel, which made his uncle Daedalus jealous and angry. One day Daedalus discovered Talos and his mother Perdix in a... compromising situation and flipped, using that as an excuse to kill Talos. He threw Talos from the top of the Acropolis. Perdix later hung or drowned herself. Many years later, Talos was reincarnated as a guardian, or animal who can talk and instructs senshi on their powers. He became a partridge, to be exact, and was guardian of Sophia Dunn, also known as Sailor Metis. He located a number of other senshi, including Hephaestos, Persephone, and Hades. His team, the Graikos, fought with the other teams, and all was well for a time. Then Hades was killed in battle, and things began to get serious. Things still would have been fine had it not been for two things: the arrival of senshi from the Dark Universe, a sort of parallel dimension, and Talos's confessing to Sophie that he loved her. Bad, bad move on his part. She completely rejected him (to her credit, he was a partridge at the time) and he ran off and ended up befriending the first Dark Universe alien, Bjerlo Ge'dall'istra. He stuck with Bjerlo until the rest of the Dark Universe aliens arrived, and then his betrayal of the Graikos was complete. The Dark Universe senshi did do one important thing for Talos, though: they gave him back his human form with an infusion of dark energy. This was especially important to Talos because in human form he had hands, something he lacked as a partridge, and hands gave him the ability to return to inventing. Unfortunately, he's still a turncoat, hated by nearly everyone, and his human form has a number of problems. Like being constantly exhausted, prone to sickness, and unable to age for the time being. Poor guy. Got killed in ancient Greece, resurrected, and he still can't grow up. He's utterly enthralled by children with their naiveté and innocence, and jealous of adults with their experience, wisdom, and success. Personally, I absolutely love him. He's quirky, obsessive, angsty with very valid reason, and adorable. He just needs people who'll love and respect him and accept him. Too bad they're in short supply in the rpg, with very valid reason.
If you want to see my one attempt at description, try the full webpage. I managed to leave out the teardrop face marking, though. His outfit actually has two versions: one for when he's at a slightly higher energy level, one for when he's exhausted and feel like crap, which is the norm. The only difference is some light purple lining on the higher-energy version and the collar.
Uh, mostly all old art... I haven't scanned any recent Talos pictures. But you can get a fair idea of his costume. I ALWAYS FORGET THE FACE MARKINGS. PLEASE DO NOT FORGET THE FACE MARKINGS. XDDD Quite frankly, I mess so many things up, I'm happy if you come up with something semi-recognizable. Half the time I don't seem to know what he's wearing anyway. Every picture had something wrong with it except the single new picture I created just to give you guys a reference that didn't have something wrong. Higher-level:
